A Spotlight Interview for National Apprenticeship Week
Andrew joined VLS at the end of 2022. As he had previous experience in a similar field, we are pleased to have supported him through his NVQ Level 3 in HGV Maintenance and Repair with Gateshead College.
Andrew is now coming to the end of his training and is currently working at one of our Maintenance and Repair sites in Pity Me, Durham. We caught up with him to find out more about his role and the HGV maintenance and repair apprenticeship.
What is your role and how long have you been with VLS?
My role with VLS is an Apprentice/Improver HGV/Light Commercial Technician, I have been employed with VLS for 15 months now.
What is a typical day in your role?
A typical day in my role is maintaining/repairing vehicles to a high standard and meeting customers needs.
Where does your motivation come from?
My motivation comes from having a strong interest in the job and always willing to learn new skills and push myself further, working as a team and getting as many vehicles turned around and back to the customer as quickly and efficiently as possible.
What is your favourite part of the Apprenticeship/Improver programme?
My favourite part of the Apprenticeship/Improver programme is learning new skills from different colleagues, being able to work on more challenging tasks, and become more knowledgeable on different types of vehicles and how to repair them.
What is the most challenging thing about your Apprenticeship/Improver programme?
The most challenging part of my Apprenticeship/Improvership has been adapting to HGV, coming from a light vehicle background, and developing an understanding of how to inspect and repair HGV vehicles to the highest standard.
Do you have any highlights that stand out?
My biggest highlight so far was passing my Class 1 HGV driving test, something I never imagined I would do.
